December "Doings"

M
December has kept us very busy! We've enjoyed a puppy visit, cheer assembly, storytellers (one winner was from our very own class), making gingerbread people, a class Christmas quilt, and another super party given by our great mothers. Again, thanks for the stories, games, crafts, and delicious treats. It's hard to believe that Santa's visit is only one week away! Merry Christmas to you all out there in Blog Land. Oh yeah, if anyone out there gets a bit bored during the holidays, we have a fun little web site to visit :) Enjoy!!!!! This is the Dogzilla author Dav Pilkey's site.

Our Thanksgiving Feast

OUR Thanksgiving Feast was better than the Pilgrims could ever have imagined! Thanks to our wonderful room mothers, we feasted on cornbread muffins, jerky, potatoes, carrots, seeds and nuts (honey roasted), dried fruit, deviled eggs (a big hit), and pumpkin cake for dessert.

Author Visit

Jennifer A. Nielsen visited our school today. She is the author of the book Elliot and the Goblin War. She admonished us to be extraordinary, to reach for the summit when we climb our 'mountain', to never give up, and to remember that READING IS POWER!

Basket Weaving

The Southwest Indians (Hopis) were the most skilled in making baskets. Actually, we didn't do such a bad job at the weaving process ourselves!

Celebrating Indigenous People of North America (Native Americans)

As we were  just beginning our unit on Native Americans, who should just happen by, with his very own elk hide, than Mr. Lauenstein! Talk about authentic! We thought it was great and can't understand why Mrs. L. insists that he keep this treasure in the basement!

Pizza Party

As mentioned in an earlier post, our class earned a pizza party from the Walk-a-Thon. As you can see, a yummy time was had by all!

September ends with a bang!

Mrs. Finklea visited our class and shared some interesting info about food and nutrition. We learned a lot and hope we will be healthier because of her visit.

It's the GREAT PUMPKINS, Charlie Brown!!!! Wow! One of them weighed in at 1,169 pounds. We enjoyed our close encounters with these giants!

We have added a new student to our class. We welcome him and hope he feels at home in is new community!

Walk-A-Thon 2010

Friday, September 17, 2010. A perfect day to be outside. Ready. Set. Go! For over an hour, our students walked (and in some cases even jogged) for our PTSO. From the smiles on their faces, I guess a good time was had by all :)

Solar Delight

Today we constructed our own "solar ovens". We put a graham cracker with a marshmallow and chocolate bar into each oven before heading to the playground, where we placed the ovens on the blacktop to collect the heat from the sun. A small mirror helped reflect the sun's rays for heat. The chocolate melted, the marshmallows got soft, and the afternoon treat was DELICIOUS!

Tell Us About Your Summer Vacation

We're now in the process of writing about how each of us spent our summer vacations.  Each class member has interesting stories to tell and we're excited to hear about them.  They are doing a great job on this writing project.

Here is a picture of my summer vacation in Massachusetts.  We visited many fascinating places and enjoyed seeing the East Coast.

Geared Up and Ready to Learn

This is our class for the year!  I hope you enjoy traveling with us on this blog in our adventures throughout the school year.  We have a lot to learn:  multiplication tables, cursive writing, and indigenous communities.  We also have a lot of fun to do too:  weaving, painting, cooking, and pottery.  So get ready to travel along with our class.  Thanks for your support during our learning process this school year.
